The arrival of spring brings a sense of renewal to Wisconsin, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the seasonal pressures facing our local infrastructure. As the frost thaws and we look toward the months ahead, Wisconsin for Environmental Justice (WEJ) is focused on a deadline that cannot be pushed back.

Just as the season demands immediate preparation for the year’s growth, our mission requires urgent action to protect our communities from the escalating costs of climate-related damage. We cannot wait for the next fiscal cycle to address the $16 billion burden facing our state.

The Need for Fiscal Fair Play

The transition to a more resilient Wisconsin is not just a long-term goal; it is a current necessity. To ensure our cities and counties aren't left carrying the financial load alone, we must act now to:

  • Implement Responsibility: Shifting the financial burden of remediation from local taxpayers to the industries responsible for these skyrocketing costs.

  • Secure Non-Taxpayer Funds: Moving forward with the "opioid litigation model" to provide our jurisdictions with the resources they need for critical infrastructure repairs.

  • Protect Our Progress: Strengthening the "Fiscal Fair Play" plan to ensure Wisconsin remains a leader in sensible, data-driven environmental policy.

Why It Matters Now

Nature doesn’t pause its cycles, and the rising costs of infrastructure damage won't wait for a "more convenient" time. Every month of delay is another month where the financial weight remains on the shoulders of Wisconsin families.

This season, let's commit to the hard work of renewal and responsibility. We have the data, we have the strategy, and now we need collective will to see it through.

The time for "Fiscal Fair Play" is today.
